Lesley Smith makes a welcome return in a costumed portrayal of Nell Gwynne, mistress of Charles II, accompanied by her husband, Dr Gareth Williams, in the role of the “Merrie Monarch”.
Some believe Nell was only known for being the king’s favourite, other than for selling oranges. But she was a victory for English womanhood, showing great courage and against all the odds became a star of the London stage, as well as beloved of the King of England.
Lesley, a medical historian, is known for her entertaining and informative monologues, appearing as a variety of historical characters. In 2022 she delighted a festival audience here in the role of Anne Boleyn.
This time she will star in a double bill with Gareth - an internationally renowned authority on Vikings and Anglo-Saxons - who will feature as one of Britain’s most colourful monarchs.
Charles II was 12 when civil war broke out between his father, Charles I, and Parliament. He fought on his father’s behalf before being forced into exile, later being restored and crowned in 1661.
After years of austerity he was determined to restore stability and teach England to enjoy itself again, leading by example!
